“American Masters” Concert on March 24 in Omak

OMAK - Okanogan Valley Orchestra & Chorus present their final concert of the season, “American Masters”, on Sunday, March 24, at the Omak Performing Arts Center. Choral director Jonathan McBride has chosen selections from American artists Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Samuel Barber, John Denver, plus a medley from the Broadway musical “Jersey Boys”. American composers featured by the orchestra include pieces by Aaron Copeland and the thrilling Suite from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein.

OVOC has focused on outreach for this concert. A grant award received from the Woods Family Music and Arts Fund is providing for transportation of students from Oroville who will join the Orchestra and Chorus for the song “Simple Gifts”, a beautiful Shaker hymn featured in the score for Martha Graham’s Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland in 1944. The grant also covers the price of admission for students from schools county wide.

OVOC Outreach also sponsors the group Second Strings who will also be performing prior to the concert as a pre-show treat in the lobby. Second Strings, led by Roz Nau, is a group of players meeting to improve skills and to experience the joy of playing together in a learning environment. Performing in this group will be Olivia Antuna, Patti Baumgardner, Angelina Buursma, Faith Lofthus, Layla Stidman, Wanda Antuna, Nola Casady, Elaina Halvorsen, Sandy Oberg and Nancy Woodruff, directed by Roz Nau.

The concerts have been held on Saturday afternoons this season, but due to scheduling conflicts, this March 24 concert will be performed on a Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. Tickets are available at the door and through Brown Paper Tickets (event 3742073). Adult price is $12, Senior $10, Youth 14 and under are always free. Contact judy@ovocmusic.org with inquiries.
