Bridgeport Daze returns this Saturday

Posted

It'll be a parading, horseshoeing, school-reunioning, barbecuing good time at Bridgeport Daze, the annual town celebration, scheduled for this Saturday, June 7.

An all-school reunion is part of Bridgeport Daze 2008; everybody who ever went to Bridgeport school or worked in the district is invited. There will be a table in Firemen's Park where alumni can sign up.

Bridgeport Daze activities begin with the annual Jack and Jill softball tournament; games start at 8:30 a.m. Six teams are scheduled to compete. Signup for the annual horseshoe tournament begins at 10 a.m., with the tourney beginning at 11 a.m. It's doubles only, with a blind draw for partners, and double elimination. Entry fee is $5, with a $200 added purse. People who want more information can contact organizer Danny Smith in Brewster, 689-0139.

Lineup for the annual Bridgeport Daze parade begins at 9 a.m. at the old track field on 17th Street. Parade participants who couldn't find an application can sign up that morning. The parade steps off down main street at about 10 a.m. Bev and Phil Lee, the Citizens of the Year, and Atayde and Sabina Gamez, owners of Bridgeport Plaza Market, the Business of the Year, will be at the front of the line. The Friends of the Bridgeport Library and the Bridgeport Fire Department will be honored with special public service awards as well.

The parade will include participants from two Seattle-area classic car clubs; more than 30 cars are scheduled to roll into town.

For a while it looked like the annual barbecue, usually sponsored by the school's Future Farmers of America chapter, wouldn't happen due to a lack of adult participation. But some volunteers from the community have stepped up so the barbecue is on. Nancine Hawkins volunteered to help the students; she's in charge of the kitchen and students will do the serving. The menu will include the traditional beef or pork barbecue sandwich, salad and baked beans. Cost is $8 per person.

Firemen's Park will have vendors as usual; a group of Bridgeport children under the direction of Consuelo Martinez may demonstrate the traditional folk dances they have learned. That will be in the park after the parade.

The all-school reunion winds up with a dinner at the Bridgeport Elementary School cafeteria at 6 p.m.; advance registration is requested and can be made by contacting Celeste Bush at the Bridgeport School District office. But people can register and pay for dinner at the door. The menu includes salmon or grilled citrus chicken and salad.
