Harvest fair at Adventist school this Saturday

The Brewster Adventist School is sponsoring a harvest fair and school carnival this Saturday, Nov. 15, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the school. Activities will include games for the children, food and music. There's a Western theme so participants are asked to come dressed in Western attire.

The school is located at 150 Valley Road on Brewster Flat.

Cookies out there, somewhere

Bridgeport Chamber president Charlene Knox has baked another batch of cookies and is giving them away today, Thursday, Nov. 13-but there's a catch. Bridgeport residents will have to go looking for them.

The cookies are in plain sight in a Bridgeport business that's a Chamber member; the participants this week include CJ's Auto, the White Barn Basket Company, Carol's Style Stop and the Bridgeport NCNB branch.

Chamber meeting Nov. 14

The Christmas tree lighting and crime prevention will be on the agenda at the monthly meeting of the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce Friday, Nov. 14 at noon at Bridgeport City Hall. Lunch will be catered by Nell's Drive In.

The Christmas tree lighting is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 1 in Bouska Square; Chamber members will discuss the program, along with other ideas to promote Bridgeport businesses through the holiday season. Douglas County Sheriff Harvey Gjesdal will talk about the Neighborhood Watch program, crime prevention and other concerns. There will also be a discussion of Chamber events planned for 2009.

All interested Bridgeport residents are invited.

Noxious weed class Nov. 20

Noxious weeds and how to kill them, with minimum damage to the surrounding ground, will be the topic of a daylong recertification class sponsored by the Okanogan County Noxious Weed Board Thursday, Nov. 20. The seminar will be from 8 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. at the Agriplex at the Okanogan County Fairgrounds in Okanogan.

Jim Jharr, who works at Wilbur Ellis, will talk about bare ground options in weed patches. Bob Stewart of Dow Chemical will review weed identification and discuss how to calibrate sprays in backpack tanks, stewardship techniques and how to use the information on spray container labels for optimum results.

Dale Whaley of WSU-Douglas County Extension will discuss biocontrol of noxious weeds. Marc Mustoe, Clearwater Seed, will talk about grasses and legumes for ground improvement after the weeds are gone. In addition, there will be weed control updates by officials from the Bureau of Land Management, U. S. Forest Service, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Washington Department of Natural Resources and Colville Confederated Tribes Fish and Wildlife.

Annual fall turkey shoot

The North Cascades Sportsman's Club is holding their 15th annual Fall Turkey Shoot on Sunday, Nov. 23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the gun club and shooting range. There will be a free pig barbeque and beverages for those who attend. There will be events in pistol, rifle, black powder and shotgun (trap and skeet) and children's events. Tickets are $5 for each event. Five tickets gets you a guaranteed bird. Come see our club house and other facilities. To get there: take the old highway north from Chelan, turn on Apple Acres Road at the airport, then to Washington Creek Road and follow the road to the club grounds.
