Dinner, karaoke at Quad City Eagles Saturday

The Quad City Eagles will sponsor a dinner followed by karaoke this Saturday, June 7 at the Eagles lodge, 1030 Columbia Avenue in Bridgeport. The menu includes baby back ribs, salad and dessert bar; dinner is served at 6 p.m. Karaoke by Jerry follows at 8 p.m. Cost is $10 per person.

Neighborhood watch meeting June 11

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office will sponsor a meeting to talk about neighborhood watch programs, what they are and establishing them, Wednesday, June 11 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Bridgeport City Hall.

Douglas County Sheriff Harvey Gjesdal and officials with the Washington State Crime Prevention Association will talk about crime prevention, establishing neighborhood watch programs and other ways to reduce crime in the community. Sheriff's deputy Juan Sanchez will translate the presentation into Spanish. Bridgeport residents, neighborhood groups, civic organizations and all interested parties are invited to attend.

PATEROS

Sunday service added at Methodist Church

The congregation at the Pateros United Methodist Church will add a second service to their Sunday schedule beginning next Sunday, June 8. The services will be at 9 and 11 a.m. each Sunday, with "fellowship time" between the two, at approximately 10:15 a.m. All interested Quad City area residents are invited.

'Shot doctor' basketball camp June 12

Basketball players in the third through eighth grades are invited to participate in the one-day "Shot Doctor" basketball camp Thursday, June 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pateros School gym. The camp's goal is to teach players to shoot more and consistently, improve their range and footwork, become better jump shooters and free throw shooters. BREWSTER

Special hospital board meeting Monday

The Okanogan Douglas Hospital District board of directors will hold a special board meeting Monday, June 9 at noon to review the district's contract with Quorum Health Services. All interested district patrons are being invited.

Calvary Baptist fundraiser June 13, 14

The congregation at the Calvary Baptist Church in Brewster will hold a fundraising garage sale and cookie sale Friday and Saturday, June 13 and 14 in the church parking lot. Friday the sale starts at noon and lasts to 7 p.m.; Saturday's sale is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The money raised will help pay for children from the church to attend summer Bible camp. The church is located at 115 North 6th Street in Brewster.

Pest management field day June 12

Tree fruit producers, pesticide applicators, field management specialists and anybody else involved with the apple business is being invited to an "apple pest management field day," Thursday, June 12 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Crane and Crane Orchards in Brewster. It's sponsored by WSU-Okanogan County Extension. Pest management specialists will talk about integrated pest management, controlling codling moth and leaf rollers and secondary pests, pruning trees and spraying technology and ways to evaluate the impact of decisions. Signs will be posted to help participants find the orchard. The program is free.

'Pie social' in North Star district June 21

Okanogan County pioneers and people interested in Brewster area history are being invited to the third annual "Pie Social" Saturday, June 21 at 1 p.m. at the historic Fries homestead, 549 Valley Road, Brewster. Ken and Julie Melvin will be the hosts; Keith Zielke and Margi Allen own the property. For three years now residents and local history enthusiasts have gotten together to talk over the pioneer days, especially in the North Star district, and do a little historical preservation. Participants plan to clean and build a fence around the grave of Lila Britain, who died at three years of age in 1914 and was buried in the Zanol family plot. Ralph Fries, who was born on the old homestead, has been part of the project from the beginning and has done considerable historical research on the North Star district. This year he will have information on the Utt cattle ranch. Pioneer Richard Hanson, born on the Hanson homestead in 1916, plans to attend the 2008 gathering. Participants are asked to bring a favorite pie, a chair and pictures and memories of pioneer days. "Margi and Keith will provide the ice cream, table settings and beverages," Margi said. Forestry education 'field day' June 19

Okanogan County youths interested in learning about forest management and practices are invited to a daylong class Thursday, June 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sinlahekin Wildlife Area. A carpool will be leaving from the WSU-Okanogan County Extension office at about 8:15 a.m. Dale Swedberg will be the speaker and will be talking about pest and weed management, forest health, preventing forest fires and other topics. Participants should wear hiking boots or good tennis shoes; pants and shirts with long sleeves, sunscreen and bug repellent are recommended. People who want more information can contact the extension office in Okanogan.

Saul Gallegos Memorial Run June 21

A run to support the family of Saul Gallegos, a Chelan County Sheriff's Deputy killed in the line of duty, will be Saturday, June 21 at Singleton Park in Manson. Runners will take to the course at about 8 a.m., with walkers following. Participants have their choice of course, with a 5K and 10K for runners.

Gallegos died June 23, 2003 while making a traffic stop in the Manson area. This is the third year people have been invited to run and walk in support of Gallegos' wife Maria and four children. People who want to register or who want more information can visit the event website, www.saulmemorial.net.
