Fireworks illegal in national forest

Campers in the Okanogan/Wenatchee National Forest will have to resist the temptation to celebrate the nation's birthday with fireworks; fireworks are illegal in all national forest lands.

Penalties for lighting fireworks can include fines up to $5,000 or up to six months of jail time, according to a press release issued by the National Forest Service. If the fireworks start a forest or range fire, people shooting them off can be held liable for the costs of fighting the fire, the press release said.

Fish field days July 10, 16

Okanogan County youths interested in knowing more about local species of fish, fish hatcheries, fish habitat and raising fish for commercial use are being invited to two "field days" Thursday, July 10 and Wednesday, July 16.

The July 10 program will be at the Omak fish hatchery and the Columbia River Fish Farm near Omak; presenters will talk about raising fish for sale, how hatcheries fit into the larger picture of maintaining fish runs. Participants will get a tour of the fish hatchery as well. The July 16 program will be at the Peniel Ranch along the Columbia River. The program includes information on fish biology and fish harvest, fish habitat, commercial fish production and fish runs along the river.

Each program is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; people who want to carpool can meet at the WSU-Okanogan County Extension office at the Okanogan County Courthouse at 8:15 a.m. Participants should bring a sack lunch and wear hiking shoes or good tennis shoes.
