School Nurse Corps celebrates 20 years of service

Wenatchee – The Washington State School Nurse Corps helps ensure that all students in Washington schools have access to registered nursing services. Established by the Legislature in 1999, this state-wide program is marking its 20th year of service to students and school districts.

School Nurse Corps envisions equitable, full access to school nursing services so that all children can be safe and successful in school and life. Two essential services are provided: funding for direct professional registered nursing services in small, rural school districts with the greatest needs, and regional infrastructure to ensure equity and student health and safety needs are addressed, including a nurse administrator in each Educational Service District.

 North Central Educational Service District supports School Nurse Corps services for Chelan, Douglas, Grant, and Okanogan school districts, providing financial support to 12 districts and regionalized support services to 29 districts. Over 40,000 students are served in the region. Across the state, School Nurse Corps promotes student health and safety, improves attendance, fosters academic achievement, reduces health and educational disparities, and contributes to the development of an engaged and informed citizenry and workforce.

 In 2013, School Nurse Corps was the recipient of the prestigious Washington State Warren Featherstone Reid award, recognized for its exceptional quality, innovative design, and value in the delivery of healthcare services.
