Bears nab fifth consecutive league baseball title

Posted

TONASKET – The Brewster Bears varsity baseball team completed an undefeated 14-1 regular season with a 4-1 over Tonasket on the road, April 30, to bring home their fifth consecutive Central Washington 2B League title.

“It wasn’t really a slugfest,” said coach Todd Phillips. “They outhit us, but our two doubles proved to be important.”

The Bears took the lead on a Cade Gebbers double with one out and crossed the plate on Kade Kelpman’s double. Brewster extended the lead in the sixth inning when Gebbers reached first on a bunt, stole second and was brought home by Jeff Sonneman. Tonasket cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

“We put up two in the seventh when Joe Taylor reached on an error, advanced on a fielder’s choice and scored on two passed balls,” said Phillips. “AJ Woodward scored the final run when he pinch-ran for Conner Ashworth after he was intentionally walked and went from first to third on a passed ball Joe scored on, then scored on yet another passed ball.”

Phillips said practices will be intense and competitive adding “we are going to push each other to see who wants to play in these playoffs.”

The final doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, May 4, at Oroville did not develop, “so we are looking for two make up games before the playoffs start,” Phillips said.

Brewster is scheduled to meet Ephrata at Moses Lake at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 11. The District championship game is at 3 p.m. that afternoon.

“They say the playoffs are a new season and that is how we are going to look at it,” said Phillips. It is like we are starting tryouts all over again.”
