Bears roll to first league win over Tonasket

Posted

TONASKET – Two weeks ago following Brewster’s 48-8 football win over Mabton, head coach Jake Johanson said he was looking ahead to the Bears’ first league game on the road against Tonasket.

“They are always tough, and we are going to have to bring it all week in practice to prepare for a tough league game,” Johanson said back then.

Turns out the Bears were more than up for the challenge. Brewster held the Tigers to a single six-point touchdown while they racked up 41 points and a fast start to their league run.

“The whole team came out fired up from the opening kickoff return and we were able to shut the door on them in the second half, “said Johanson. “I was really proud of our offensive line and everybody that ran the ball. That was a total team effort to get that big win.”

With Homecoming just ahead and 0-2 Liberty Bell coming to town this Friday, the Bears see a good chance at extending their league record to 2-0 “if we can put together a good week of practice,” Johanson said.

Alfredo Nila and Jeff Sonneman led the defense with five tackles each and “played really good from their linebacker spots,” Johanson said.

The Bears’ varsity wasn’t the only winner. The JV team beat Tonasket, 32-8. Javier Rosario scored two touchdowns including one for 97 yards.
