Billygoats Espino places 2nd at invite

Posted

PATEROS – Varsity wrestling coach Bill Haley said several his wrestlers – over half in fact – are “pretty new to the sport, but they are learning fast.”
Helping that process along are tournaments like last Saturday’s Okanogan Invite where the Billygoats made a respectable showing against seven opponents, including last season’s state 2B champions, Tonasket.
The Tigers again dominated the Okanogan meet with 303 team points, 170 more than second place host Okanogan. Oroville and Republic-Curlew were third and fourth respectively with near-dead heat totals of 106.5 and 106 points.
Brewster with 87 points and Wilber-Creston with 79 finished ahead of Pateros with 71, but several Billygoats turned in solid performances in their weight brackets.
Erick Espino, the Billygoats’ only state veteran, placed second behind Colin Silverthorn of Tonasket in the 120-pound class. Espino finished sixth in the State championships last season.
106 lbs.
2 Ramiro Ambriz (sophomore)
3 Oscar Ambriz (eighth grade)

2 Erick Espino (freshman)

3 Enrique Castellanos (senior)
This is the fourth road trip for Pateros after starting the season at Davenport, then traveling to Liberty Bell and Oroville. Next stop for the Billygoats is the North Okanogan Holiday Invitational (NOHI) at Oroville on Saturday, Dec. 16.
