Billygoats take two from Bridgeport, lose to Raiders

PATEROS – The Billygoats varsity baseball team capitalized on weak pitching to defeat the Bridgeport Mustangs, 19-5 and 13-3 in doubleheader league action at Pateros last Saturday, April 14.
Senior, Tano Martinez started the first game for the Mustangs and pitched through the first three innings.
“He was a lefty and did a fairly good job,” said Pateros coach Bob VanLith.
Martinez also clobbered a two-run homer to go along with hits by teammates Miguel Mendoza, Axel Martinez, and Isai Acevado to give the Mustangs five runs through the third inning. With the teams tied, Martinez had to leave the pitcher’s mound in the third inning and was relieved by Mendoza.
Mendoza did his best but Pateros exploited Bridgeport’s shallow pitching bench to score 11 runs in the third on a combination of walks and hits.
Dakota Poole pitched four innings for Pateros and gave up one hit, four walks and five runs with three strikeouts.
Max Ewing took over the mound in the fifth inning and gave up one hit and one walk. Ewing also hit 3-3 in the game with two doubles. Teammate Slade Ginter hit 2-3.
Mustangs sophomore, Manny Flores moved from third base in the first game to the pitcher’s mound in game two for Bridgeport, followed by reliever, Gilberto Rodriguez.
Bridgeport scored two runs on hits by Tano and Axel Martinez, and Acevado. A third run was added on a Pateros throwing error.
Logan Robinson pitched four innings for Pateros and gave up three hits and one walk to go with eight strikeouts. Robinson also hit 4-4 with a double.
Poole smacked the game’s only home run on 2-3 hitting.
Jeremy Piechalski pitched the fifth inning and threw two strikeouts. Piechalski gave up two hits, two walks and three runs.
