Breaks three-way knot

Brewster tops Raiders, tied for first with Oroville in CW2B

BREWSTER – The basketball matchup of the early season between two of the Central Washington 2B League’s top three teams, the Bears and Lake Roosevelt was not as close as expected when 4-1 Brewster hosted the 4-1 Raiders in Champions Gym last Thursday, Dec. 20.

Combining a smothering defense with a passing and penetrating offense, Brewster jumped out to an 18-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and were never seriously threatened during the rest of the game as the Bears cruised to a 30-point, 66-36 final over Lake Roosevelt.

Following a slow start where both teams remained scoreless through the first two minutes, sophomore Cade Gebbers broke the stalemate with a corner shot that put the Bears up, 2-0, Brewster dropped in 10 more points before the Raiders got on the board with 3:20 left in the first quarter. The lid stayed on the basket for Lake Roosevelt through the remainder of the quarter with the Bears taking a 16-point advantage into the second quarter.

The Raiders had their hands full trying to get inside Brewster’s defense and the perimeter shots they tried would not fall through the second quarter where they entered the halftime locker room down 35-8.

The last half of the game was anticlimactic since it was more a question of how much ground the Raiders could recover from being 27 points down to a motivated host. The Bears nearly doubled their first-half score while Lake Roosevelt scored 28.

Before last night’s game the only loss either team suffered was against Oroville. The 4-1 Hornets were scheduled to host winless Waterville-Mansfield, Friday, Dec. 21, so there is a strong possibility that they will join the Bears at 5-1 at the top of the CWB. The next meeting between Brewster and Oroville is Jan. 15, 2019.
