State veterans Wright, Nanamkin lead Bears into 2018 track season

BREWSTER – State track veterans Karste Wright and Ernie Nanamkin are among a near-three-dozen athletes who comprise the Bears varsity track and field team this season.
Nanamkin, a junior, placed sixth in the javelin and eighth in the 400 meters as a sophomore at the 2017 state championships in Cheney. Wright, now a sophomore, turned in a sixth-place high jump as a freshman.
Assistant coach Nancy Rios said that about half of the roster is new to the team from last year. The grade breakdown includes three seniors, 11 juniors, nine sophomores, and 12 freshmen.
Seniors include Rosa Tinoco, Marta Martinez, and Nayeli Ortega.
Juniors are Ernie Nanamkin, Victor Abrego, Maritza Silva, Breanna Clune, Julissa Olvera, Adrianna Covarrubias, Kimberly Nila, Juan Garcia, Alfredo Nila, Betty Martinez, and Giselle De La Paz.
Sophomores include Karste Wright, Ubaldo Arellano, Javier Whitehouse, Kylee Clune, Nila Sutherland, Miriam Garcia, Kelsey Ochoa, Chisato Motowaki, and Rodolfo Madrid.
Freshmen are Victoria Torres, Brisa Aparicio, Anthony Talavera, Angel Clune, Maria Ruiz, Cuaohtenoc Arellano, Esther Ponce, Melissa Garcia, Giovanni Nila, Mario Guzman, Jennifer Hernandez, and Oscar Guzman.  
Among the returning veterans from 2017 are seniors Martinez and Tinoco. Returning juniors, besides Nanamkin, include Abrego, Olvera, Kim Nila, Martinez, Garcia, De La Paz, and Alfredo Nila. Sophomores back for another year, besides Wright, are Torres, Sutherland, Ochoa, and Arellano.
The track team began practice on Feb. 26 to get ready for its first competition scheduled for Tuesday, March 13, at the Bridgeport Jamboree. On Saturday, March 17, the team will travel to the Papa Wells Invite at East Valley High School in Yakima.
