Veterans lead the way

BRIDGEPORT – The Fillies varsity basketball team is getting back some half dozen experienced veterans to make up for three talented seniors lost to graduation, including leading scorer Samantha Martinez.
Returning from last season are seniors Emily Saucedo, Kaiden Morris, and Carmen Itzel Muniz, juniors Ana Trejo and Karina Craig, and sophomores Esmeralda Garcia and Erika Santana. New freshman faces on the varsity include Monica Trejo, Karla Torres, and Bianca Torres.
Head coach Stuart Dezellem said he expects junior Ana Trejo to step up as team leader as the Fillies face a lineup of strong opponents in the Central Washington 2B League this season.
“Ana is a hard-working athlete, on and off the court,” Dezellem said.
The coach will also look to his two sophomores, Garcia and Santana, to “Make a big impact on the game at both ends of the floor.”
The three freshmen “will provide the much-needed outside shooting the Fillies have lacked over the past few years,” Dezellem said.
Bianca Torres, still recovering from a soccer injury is at about 50 percent strength, said Dezellem. “Hopefully by January she can play at her normal speed.”
Dezellem said he has a small roster of junior varsity players at this point in the season. They include Maria Santana, Catalina Martinez, Jasmine LeDuc, Yareli Palacio, Aracely Valdovinos, and Esmeralda Cancino.
The Fillies are coming off a rough schedule last season with a 2-17 overall record.
“The girls are looking to play some competitive ball this year,” Dezellem said.
The Fillies’ CW2B opponents this season include Brewster, Liberty Bell, Tonasket, Oroville, Soap Lake, Lake Roosevelt, Waterville-Mansfield, and Manson. Bridgeport welcomes Soap Lake at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, and travels to Manson on Tuesday, Dec. 5.
Assisting Dezellem is coach Kate Luttrell.
