Defending District 5/6 champs

Lady Bears aim to repeat, exceed 2018 successes

BREWSTER – The defending league and district champion Lady Bears are returning to the diamond this season with hopes to repeat or exceed last year’s successes despite the loss of five key seniors who helped Brewster make it into the Elite Eight of state competition.

New head coach Jessie Barnes, who replaces last year’s Co-Coach of the Year Rick Miller, is no stranger to the Lady Bears’ softball legacy having served as Miller’s assistant as well as being one of the teams’ outstanding former players. Barnes’ assistant is Rafael Sanchez.

Brewster lost five seniors to graduation who filled some key infield slots on the 2018 team and were recognized with All-League honors. Abby Urias and Yvette Sanchez were voted Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year respectively. Maret Miller and Marlisa Garcia were All-League First Team picks.

The Lady Bears ended their 15-1 regular season with the Central Washington 2B championship. They followed that with a three-game sweep of Tri-Cities Prep, Liberty Christian, and Kittitas/Thorp to win the District 5/6 crown and No.1 seeding at state.

Lady Bulldogs bark

The Lady Bears’ non-league season home opener did not go the direction they wanted after a 10-run mercy rule 14-3 loss to visiting 1A Okanogan of the Caribou Trail League last Thursday, March 21. The loss served as a warmup to their first Central Washington 2B league doubleheader against Soap Lake.

Lady Eagles grounded

Soap Lake was no match for the balanced Brewster attack as the Lady Bears took both ends of a doubleheader, 20-0, and 18-3.
The Lady Bears were scheduled to host Bridgeport for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 26, and will host Chelan, another CTL 1A team on Thursday, March 28.

A doubleheader is scheduled against Waterville-Mansfield on Saturday, March 30, followed by Liberty Bell on Tuesday, March 9.
