Fillies softball team returns many veterans from last year

Posted

BRIDGEPORT – The Fillies varsity softball team turned out for their first practice on Feb. 26, with hopes of improving this season’s win record over last year’s last place finish in the Central Washington 2B league. And the Bridgeport girls are in a good position to do just that with most of the team returning after a loss of only two seniors to graduation last June.
Gone is pitcher Shaylee Polvos and second baseman Annabella Valdovinos, but that left a roster heavy with eighth graders and freshman who are older and wiser on the playing field. The initial turnout shows 14 players including veterans Maria Santana, Anissa Bustos, Michelle Parbol, Bianca Torres, Citlalay Guzman, Rae Dodson, Irene Jimenez and Marisol Hernandez. More than half, 15 of 22 players were eighth graders and freshman last season and with many of them returning, prospects are good for a winning season this year.
Facing the Fillies this season are league rivals Lake Roosevelt, Brewster, Waterville-Mansfield, Liberty Bell, Oroville, Pateros, Manson and Soap Lake. There are no non-leagues opponents on the schedule this year.
Bridgeport closed the season last year with a 3-15 league record including wins over Soap Lake and two wins over Manson. The Fillies will host Liberty Bell in their season opener at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 17.
