BRIDGEPORT – The Mustangs and Fillies varsity track and field teams were the best on the field among 15 schools that competed in the Bridgeport Invite track meet last Friday, May 5.

The Bridgeport girls scored 138.5 points and the boys 113 points to lead their respective divisions in a field that included three 1A schools from the Caribou Trail League – Chelan, Cashmere, and Omak. Other schools included Brewster, Almira-Coulee-Hartline, Entiat, Lake Roosevelt, Liberty Bell, Manson, Oroville, Soap Lake, Upper Valley Christian, Wilson Creek, and Waterville.

The best performance of the day, however, belonged to Hannah Hughes, a Mansfield High School sophomore competing on the Waterville Shockers team. Hughes finished first in the women’s 100 meters with a time of 13.13 seconds to lead the 20-runner sprint.

Hughes also excelled in field events, winning the discus with the best throw among 31 competitors with a distance of 106 feet, 1 inch, almost two feet beyond second place.

The Lady Shocker then leaped a winning 16’7” in the long jump, seven inches further than second place.

As a team, the Waterville girls finished fifth with 61.8 points.

The closest team grouping in one event was the women’s discus, where Bridgeport throwers finished in second, third, fourth, sixth, seventh and ninth spots.
