Lady Bears’ state quest ends in clash with Kalama

Reach quarterfinal round
“We struggled to pass off serve receive,” said coach Marcy Boesel, “and while we had five kids with double digit digs, we had a lot of holes in our defense.”

YAKIMA – The Brewster varsity volleyball team that headed to Yakima with high hopes for a shot at the state trophy, ended out of the running for hardware at the 2017 WIAA Volleyball Championships at the SunDome last Friday, Nov. 10.
The Lady Bears, who held opponents scoreless while winning 42 consecutive sets through the regular season and into District competition, met their match at State against Mossyrock, 3-1, and came up short against Kalama, 3-2.
Earlier, the Lady Bears locked up the Central Washington 2B League title and defeated Bi-District 5/6 opponents Dayton, Tri-Cities Prep and Kittitas to take that trophy. As the state brackets filled and the quality of competition ramped up, Brewster was paired up with the Raymond Seagulls from the 2B Pacific in the first round of 16 played Thursday, Nov. 9.
In a three-set 25-21, 25-17, 25-15 sweep, the Lady Bears sent the Seagulls flying to the consolation round while Brewster advanced to the quarterfinals and Mossyrock, who won over Walla Walla Valley Academy, 3-2, and ascended a rung on the bracket ladder.
