Lady Bears handle Chelan at home Jamboree

Posted

REWSTER – The way the Brewster varsity softball team played in its five-team Jamboree last Saturday, March 10, one would think the Lady Bears had been away from the ball diamond for the past 10 months.
The Lady Bears hosted 2A Sumner from the South Puget Sound District, 1A Chelan and Okanogan from the Caribou Trail League, and Liberty Bell from the Central Washington 2B league in a day of abbreviated inning games.
Brewster dropped its first game against a strong Sumner Spartans team, 4-2, and rebounded to beat Chelan, 5-2.
Any hopes the Lady Goats entertained of catching Brewster in the final inning went over the fence with sophomore Yvette Sanchez’s three-run homer that gave the Lady Bears a 5-2 lead and the game.
The Lady Bears swept the Central Washington 2B league and went undefeated through the District 5/6 playoffs with wins over Tri-Cities Prep, Kittitas and Dayton to claim the District title.
In the first round of the state championships, Brewster blanked Asotin, 13-0, and advanced to the Elite Eight in the playoffs. The Lady Bears lost to Napavine but defeated Liberty Bell to take fifth place.
The Lady Bears lost one senior to graduation so most of the players are back with four seniors, Marlissa Garcia, Maret Miller, Abby Urias, and Ana Aparicio. Bizzy Stam is the only junior on the roster this year. Sophomore veterans include Cynthia Sanchez, Michaum Kelpman, Yvette Sanchez, and Mikenna Kelpman. Freshmen Halle Aparicio, Anah Wulf, and Vicki Sanchez round out the varsity.
Brewster will play a doubleheader at Oroville, Saturday, March 17, and host Bridgeport at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20.
