Lady Bears reach Elite Eight in State playoff run

Posted

SPOKANE – The Brewster Lady Bears varsity basketball saw their state hopes end with Tri-Cities Prep and later St. Georges in Elite Eight play at the WIAA 2B State Championships in the Spokane Arena last weekend.

Brewster iced the Rainier Mountaineers 53-48, in the first round of state playoffs last Thursday, Feb. 27, but then had to face eventual state champions Tri-Cities Prep, the team that beat the Lady Bears in the District 5/6 championship game on Feb. 16. Junior Sammi Emigh led Brewster with 17 points while Michaun and Mikenna Kelpman added 13 and 12 points respectively.

Despite a 25-point performance by Emigh, 21 of those in the final two quarters, the Lady Jaguars scored 22 points in each of the first three quarters to lead throughout the game to a 75-45 final on Friday, March 1.

The defeat dropped Brewster into a loser out matchup against St. Georges on Saturday, March 2. The Lady Dragons opened with a 17-12 first quarter lead and maintained their margin, 24-19, through halftime.

The Lady Bears lost ground through the third quarter as St. Georges outscored Brewster, 14-5 going into the final quarter. Emigh scored half of her team-high 20 points in the fourth quarter to close the gap by four but St. Georges still led by 10 at the buzzer.

The young Lady Bears team will lose one senior, Kim Nila, so should be a force to reckon with another season’s experience next year.
