YAKIMA – After fighting back from a 3-0 deficit, the Brewster High School girls’ varsity softball team saw their dream for a state title dissolve with an opening round loss to Onalaska, 5-4, Friday, May 25, in a round of 16 game that had to go into extra innings to determine the winner.
The Lady Bears recovered from scoreless early innings to tie the game with the Loggers, 3-3, in the fourth inning that held until Onalaska broke the deadlock with an extra innings run. The loss dropped Brewster into the race for third or fourth place if they could get by four rivals standing in the way.
Brewster recovered its momentum with a 13-3 victory over Liberty to advance to the round of eight and Pe Ell. The Trojans knocked the Bears out of state, 13-1 and would go on to claim third place with a 123-4 win over Adna.
Brewster ended its season with both the Central Washington B-2B and District 5/6 trophies that also won head coach Rick Miller Co-Coach of the Year honors.
It was the final Bears game for league MVP pitcher Yvette Sanchez who shared the varsity season with sisters, Cynthia, a sophomore, who played third base, and Vicky, a freshman, who was Yvette’s designated base runner.
