BREWSTER – A league volleyball clash between two teams at opposite ends of the Central Washington 2B rankings played out last Tuesday night, Oct. 10, as the undefeated Brewster Lady Bears hosted winless Bridgeport.

In a predictable outcome, Brewster won in three straight sets, 25-7, 25-21, and 25-16, but the game offered many exciting moments when the determined Fillies came up with some outstanding digs, difficult saves and extended rallies as they tried to counter the hard-hitting net game of the Lady Bears.

Bridgeport coach Paige Stevie, in her first year with Bridgeport, thought her team played well against the league-leaders. After a slow start in the first set, Bridgeport rallied in the second and third to make the Lady Bears work hard for their wins.

The game was a special one for the Lady Bears who took the opportunity to observe Cancer Awareness Night in honor of teammate Alexsandra Vazquez who lost her battle with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, a rare cancerous tumor of the brainstem, last August.

Brewster students Maria Medina, Grace Becker, Abigail Boesel and Victoria Hull staffed a table in the gym to encourage donations from game spectators to help find a cure for all cancers including the type that claimed the life of their schoolmate.
