Mansfield girls suit up with Shocker basketball team

Posted

WATERVILLE – Mansfield sophomore basketball player Presley Avenell is one of three Kernels who will be suiting up with the Waterville-Mansfield varsity basketball team this season.
Shocker girls’ head coach Kieth Finkbeiner said Avenell, who played for Waterville last season, will swing between the varsity and junior varsity squads. When she plays JV ball, Avenell will be joining two other Mansfield ball handlers, eighth graders Hayley Vargas and Kaitlyn Donaglia who are on the Shockers’ JV team this season.
“Last year our varsity went 7-13 overall.” said Finkbeiner, “including a loser-out post season game at Lake Roosevelt that ended our season.”
The Shocker girls lost five girls from last year’s varsity.
“Our squad this year is young,” said Finkbeiner. “As a program we have three seniors, one junior, two sophomores, and the rest are freshman or eighth grade.”
Assisting Finkbeiner this season will be coach Mike Hughes.
Waterville-Mansfield opens its season on the road against Entiat on Friday, Dec. 1. The Shocker girls will host Brewster at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, and travel to Liberty Bell on Tuesday, Dec. 5.
