BRIDGEPORT – Playing the best Central Washington 2B League game of the week and perhaps their best of the season to date, the Mustangs varsity basketball team surprised the second place Oroville Hornets with a one-point, 54-53 win on Bridgeport’s home court last Thursday, Jan. 18.
The Mustangs, with seven points apiece from Ricardo Vazquez and Ronaldo Ubaldo, took a six-point, 19-13 lead into the second quarter. Anthony Jamison and Spencer Martin came alive for the Hornets in the second quarter and scored seven and six points respectively to lead an 18-point surge that gave Oroville a two-point 31-29 advantage going into halftime.
A tight third quarter saw the team tied several times and knotted 44-all at the start of the fourth. Vazquez again had the hot hand for Bridgeport with a pair of three-pointers and a quarter total of eight to keep the Mustangs in the game.
Three-pointers by Ubaldo and Gilberto Padilla and four points apiece by Martin and Easton Anderson found the Hornets ahead by one point as the clock ticked down to 11 seconds. That’s when Vazquez scored his only basket and the final two points of the period giving Bridgeport the lead, 54-53 with seven seconds remaining.
The Fillies lost a close game to Oroville, 32-29
The Mustangs lost a non-league road game at Cascade, 73-53 on Saturday, Jan. 20, while the Fillies fell 47-35.
Bridgeport was scheduled to take on the 6-6 Shockers in league action at Waterville, Tuesday, Jan. 23. Then it will be home where the Mustangs and Fillies will host Lake Roosevelt on Saturday, Jan. 27, before traveling to Brewster next Tuesday, Jan. 30.
