Nannies start volleyball season with five veterans

PATEROS – Nannies volleyball is 17 players strong this season with five of those returning varsity veterans.

Seniors Andrea Baird, Samantha White, and Ashlyn Gonzalez, junior Jessi Hixon, and sophomore Anna Williams bring welcome experience and leadership to the team following the loss of All-League senior Sarah Poole to graduation last June. Jillian Piechalski, Alley Piechalski, and Vanessa Ceniceros round out the varsity squad.

The Nannies opened their season with a non-league loss to 1A Okanogan, 13-25, 19-25, and 10-25.

“Even though we didn't come out with a win, we played strong and were happy with how we competed and challenged Okanogan throughout the match,” said Gill. “Anna Williams started off the first set with two solo blocks which set the pace of the match. Ashlyn Gonzalez had a great defensive match with 32 digs.”

Pateros hosted Moses Lake Christian to open its league season last Monday, Sept. 10, losing in three sets, 25-11 25-13 25-11.

“We started off rough in the first set,” Said Gill. “Moses Lake had a long string of serves, once we got the ball Andrea Baird caught us back up on the service line. After that we were quite successful. Ana Williams ended the night with 6 kills and Andrea Baird had 8 aces.”

Remaining league opponents include Entiat, Cascade Christian, Easton, Riverside Christian, and Wilson Creek.

The Nannies came close to state play last season but lost to Wilson Creek in the District 6 elimination round.

Pateros graduate Chloe Gill, who played for long-time head volleyball coach Gene Dowers, is taking the reins of the volleyball program this year.

Following graduation from Pateros, Gill played volleyball at Wenatchee Valley College for two seasons. She also coached at Pioneer Middle School in Wenatchee and for the North Central Washington Volleyball Club.
