Pateros girls drop two in Holiday Classic tournament

Posted

PATEROS – With three freshman starters and four eighth graders on the varsity roster, the Pateros Nannies made their opponents from Manson and Bridgeport fight for every point during the two-day Holiday Classic basketball tournament hosted by Pateros last Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 27-28.
Despite the young roster that included only two juniors and a single senior, the Nannies played a good game against an older and far larger team in the Lady Trojans. Despite a spirited defense, Pateros could not stop their taller rivals, especially six-foot senior Celina Mendoza and six-foot junior Megan Clausen. The two Lady Trojans were able to score regularly from close to the basket as Manson built a 20-point lead into a 48-28 final.
The Pateros eighth graders and freshmen combined for 25 of the Nannies’ 28 points with freshman Aleeka Smith leading the way with nine.
Manson, with three seniors, three juniors and two sophomores held the clear advantage in height and experience but aggressive defense by the Nannies resulted in a number of steals for easy baskets.
Pateros gave Bridgeport a run on Thursday, Dec. 28, as the Nannies stayed close on the heels of the Fillies and only lost by five points, 41-36.
The Nannies were scheduled to play at Easton on Thursday, Jan. 4, and will host Wilson Creek at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, followed by Entiat next Tuesday, Jan. 9.
