CHELAN – The Brewster Lady Bears took home second place in the District 5/6 2B basketball championships following a 62-43 loss to Pasco’s Tri-Cities Prep at Chelan High School on Saturday, Feb. 16.

Brewster stayed with TCP through the first quarter trailing the Lady Jaguars 17-13, but already TCP’s standout sophomore Talia von Oelhoffen was making her presence felt. The 2018 National Athletic Association of Private Schools Division 3 Player of the Year hit a pair of three-pointers on her way to scoring 12 of TCP’s 17 first-quarter points.

Brewster’s Michaun Kelpman with seven points, Kim Nila with four, and Kelsey Ochoa with two, kept the Central Washington 2B League champs in contention.

The Lady Bears lost a little ground in the second quarter but still remained within striking distance, 29-22, at the end of the first half. Ochoa with a pair of threes and Mikenna Kelpman with a single kept Brewster close. Brewster was missing the services of Brooklynne Boesel who is recovering from a concussion.

In the third quarter, the undefeated Lady Jaguars, ranked first in the top state 2B standings, logged their best quarter outscoring Brewster by 13, 20-7, taking a 49-29 lead into the final eight minutes. Von Oelhoffen added another 12 points to her game-high 35 as TCP held the lead through the 62-43 final.

Von Oelhoffen led all scorers with 35 points. Michaun Kelpman and Kelsey Ochoa led Brewster with 13 apiece.

In other district 5/6 playoff action, Liberty Bell defeated Lake Roosevelt, 45-26, for third place while Mabton outlasted Waterville-Mansfield for the fifth and final trophy.

The Lady Bears, with a No. 10 RPI ranking as of Monday, Feb. 18, will play in Regional competition, Friday, Feb. 22, at a time and location to be determined.
