State veteran leads combined Pateros-Brewster wrestlers

PATEROS – Brewster senior and state tournament veteran Gabe Garcia is leading the combined team of Pateros and Brewster varsity wrestlers into league competition this year.

Head coach Shane Kelly has Bears’ wrestlers Kaitlin Garcia, Rodolfo Madrid, Geo Martinez, Jose Villanueva, Javier Rosario, and Justice Serrano joining Gabe Garcia from Brewster. Pateros grapplers competing this season include Anthony Medal, Josh Smith, Danny Dowers, Satin Wright, and Ramiero Ambriz.

Kelly has a young team with many wrestlers relatively new to the sport.

“Four of my wrestlers have more than one year of experience,” Kelly said. “A lot of them are just second-year guys. We don’t have any heavyweights, and a fair number of middleweights.”

The team has competed at Okanogan and Davenport so far this season.

“We took third at the Okanogan tournament as a team,” said Kelly. “We wrestled above our potential.”

The team’s competition schedule is still being completed as of this writing. Their next competition is at the Oroville NOHI, Sat. Dec. 22.
