Fillies’ post-season shot ends with tiebreaker loss to Tonasket

BRIDGEPORT – The Fillies’ varsity basketball team saw its bid for a post-season berth in the District 5/6 playoffs dissolve with a loss to Tonasket in a tiebreaker last Thursday, Feb. 7, to determine which team would advance.

Both the Fillies and Lady Tigers ended the season with 5-11 win-loss records in the Central Washington 2B league and needed to battle it out for the sixth and final place for District qualification.

Earlier in the regular season Bridgeport split games with Tonasket, losing the first 44-33, and winning the second, 46-45.

Behind the three-point shooting of Karla Torres and Karina Craig, Bridgeport jumped out to an eight-point 15-7 lead that Tonasket closed in the second quarter to go in front 24-20 at halftime. Torres scored nine of her team-high 19 points in the third quarter to put the Fillies back on top 37-31. But Bridgeport had a final quarter than matched their second and Tonasket took advantage of the slump to pump in 18 points for the 49-42 win.

“We just ran out of gas tonight,” wrote Fillies head coach Stuart Dezellem in his post-game report. “Went 0-7 from the line.”

Tonasket also amped up its defensive tempo in the final quarter to hold Bridgeport to single-digit scoring.

“Tonasket put full court pressure on in the fourth that gave us a little trouble,” wrote Dezellem. “Tempo went up and we just ran out of gas at the end. “

The win put Tonasket on the bus to Hanford High School in Richland for the first round of District last weekend.

Brewster wins
The Fillies needed just one win to jump ahead of Tonasket on the CW2B ladder but had to beat the Lady Bears when they hosted Brewster on Senior Night at their final regular season game on Tuesday, Feb. 5.

The Fillies could not contain Brewster junior Sammi Emigh under the basket while the Lady Bear scored game-high 23 points to lead Brewster to a 60-34 win and the CW2B league title.

Brewster took a 10-point first-quarter lead and widened that to 18 by halftime. Another double-digit output in the third quarter gave the Lady Bears a 21-point lead as they coasted to their 26-point win.
