Waterville-Mansfield returns strong nucleus of veterans

WATERVILLE – The Lady Shockers have a solid core of returning players after losing six seniors, four of them starters, last season.
Coach Ruben Salcido has nine players back from last year’s team plus three new girls “with very limited softball experience,” the coach said.
The upperclassmen-heavy team boats five seniors, three juniors, and four sophomores.
“My pitcher is Ariana Salcido, a sophomore who pitched last year and has a lot of experience for this season,” said the coach. “My big hitting comes from a few girls like Alyssa Hansen, Drew Koenig, Cora Dills, Haylee Newcombe, Sarah Velasquez and Basi Jimenez.”
Salcido said he is seeing improvement every day.
“Every day we practice I see huge gain in my team, fielding, hitting, throwing and basic fundamentals,” said Salcido. “I look for my older girls to push the younger girls and teach them so they can build confidence and have a good foundation for the future seasons.”
Salcido coached his daughters’ team in the Okanogan and Omak League seven years. This is his first year at the Waterville/Mansfield school district.
