PATEROS – When young athletes are getting their first exposures to a sport and their first experiences with varsity competition, a focus on fundamentals of the game and improvement is often a sound choice for a coach.
That’s what Pateros High School varsity tennis coach, Sean Hiltz plans to do with the bulk of his young players this season now that warmer weather allowed the team to begin practice on all three school courts just recently.
“We have 10 turning out, five boys and five girls,” said Hiltz, and many are younger, first-time players.
“We had five or so seniors and juniors last year, several of whom graduated or moved on to other sports,” Hiltz said.
While he is left with a few upper classmen, Hiltz will keep to the basic for his newer players as they face some stiff competition from some of the larger and tougher 1A schools on the schedule like Okanogan, Omak, and Cashmere.
Pateros was scheduled to take on the Raiders at Lake Roosevelt last Tuesday, March 14, followed by Chelan, March 15. The Billygoats’ first home match will be against Cascade at 4 p.m. Monday, March 20. Pateros will be at Tonasket on Tuesday, March 21, and Okanogan, Thursday, March 23, before returning home to host Omak at 4 p.m. Friday, March 24.
Hiltz served as Pateros assistant coach for the last couple of years and volunteered with the team before that. A 2006 Pateros graduate, Hiltz attended college at Central Washington where he played club tennis since the school did not have a collegiate team.
