BREWSTER – The Bears varsity baseball team gave the 2A Othello Huskies a workout in a split doubleheader on the road last Saturday, April 20, and left league rival Liberty Bell with a 12-run deficit on Tuesday, April 16. The Bears jumped out to a one-run lead in the first inning in game one against the Huskies who trailed from that point to through the final inning and an 8-4 loss. Corey Jarrell got on base with a walk and went to third base on Mason Kelly’s single. Quincy Vassar doubled to score both runners in the first inning. Joe Taylor scored in the third to put the Bears up, 3-1. “Our big inning was the fourth,” said head coach Todd Phillips of the three-run effort. Both Cade Gebbers and Logan McGuire singled. Kade Kelpman walked to load the bases. Taylor singled to score a run, Jarrell drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Kelpman scored on an error. With the score 6-3 going into the sixth inning, Kelpman, Taylor and Jarrell singled on the way to the Bears’ final two runs. Pitcher Connor Ashworth was credited with the win and Vassar with the save.
