Mansfield spellers going to regionals

MANSFIELD - The third annual spelling bee at Mansfield last Friday brought out a competitive edge in the students.

"Our bee was very competitive this year as our final two battled for champion status for several rounds," said teacher Kelly Gilpin in an e-mail.

The bee featured the top three spellers from each grade first through eighth, Gilpin said.

Seventh grader Christian Vargas won first place overall, and fourth grader Carter Shafer took second place.

Eighth grader Carrie Jones and fourth grader Jenavieve Alford took home honors for third and fourth place, respectively.

"We are very pleased with how smoothly the competition ran - the kids seemed to have fun and they competed well," Gilpin said. "We had a great supportive audience as well from the community and some super impressive upcoming champions from younger grades."

The judging panel included school Business Manager Shelley Gilliam, grandparent Robyn Hall and 10th grader Lane Leonard. Gilpin was the pronouncer, and the competition announcer was sophomore Collin Pate.

Vargas and Shafer will move on to the regional bee March 21 in Wenatchee. The winner there will compete at the national spelling bee in Washington, D.C.
