BREWSTER – At its first meeting of the new year last Wednesday, Jan. 10, the Brewster Chamber of Commerce announced its 2018 officers and directors. They include:
Anna Marie Dalbey - President; Martin Hurtado - Vice President; Mike Mauk - Secretary; Leslie McNamara - Treasurer; Dan Webster - Director; Chris Majors - Director and Manny Hurtado – Director
The chamber also launched a membership drive and is requesting each business to complete the 2018 membership form and specify what it would like to say about itself for the chamber website. A business can also email its logo to webmaster Chris Majors at cmajors@trhospital.net for inclusion on the chamber website.
Chamber members were asked to submit nominations for Brewster Business of the Year and Citizen of the Year by Friday, Jan. 19, including the reasons for said selections. Once nominations are received, ballots will be mailed along with the 2018 membership applications.
The first annual Brewster Chamber Business Awards Dinner is tentatively scheduled for March 24, where Business and Citizen of the Year will be honored.
“Our goal is to have more as we go forward,” said Dalbey. “We want to recognize those businesses and people in our community that go the extra mile to make Brewster a better place.”
In an effort to attract more participants to the monthly chamber meetings, Dalbeysaid she plans to invite guest speakers to bring value-added information to each meeting.
It was also recommended that the chamber purchase a plaque that will list and recognize member businesses under the chamber logo.
Martin Hurtado reported that the first annual Las Posadas event last Dec. 23 attracted about 50 participants despite the freezing temperature. Carolers in the cold were finally given shelter at the Armory Inn where warming fires, hot drinks and tamales helped fight off the chill. Hurtado suggested holding Las Posada earlier next December to try to avoid the colder weather.
Hurtado also suggested that the chamber organize a St. Patrick’s Day parade in March and is serving as chairperson of that committee.
Also in the works are plans for the new Cherry Jubilee scheduled for late June. Dalbey is chairperson for the Jubilee Committee.
The chamber’s first Business After Hours gathering will be held at Coldwell Banker on Main Street at 5:30 Wednesday, Jan. 24. Snacks and refreshments will be served.
Coldwell Banker is also providing its room for Keith Johnson to teach a beginning Spanish class that began Monday, Jan 15, and will continue at 5:30 p.m. every Monday and Thursday evening. Cost is $10 and interested parties can contact Dalby for more information at amdalbey@gmail.com or call 509-449-6881.
The next chamber meeting is at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Gamble Fitness on Main Street.
