Council approves Armory CUP, appoints Assistant Fire Chief

BREWSTER—The City Council appointed Dylan Gamble as the city’s new Assistant Fire Chief and approved a conditional use permit (CUP) for Brewster Quick Lube, among other business at its regular monthly meeting last Wednesday, May 10.
Brewster Quick Lube has been open and operating since January, said co-owner, Manny Hurtado, but since the business is sharing a building with another adjacent business, a separate CUP was required by the city.
With mayor pro tem Tim Rieb filling in for Art Smyth, Council approved a resolution to accept matching funds from the Washington State Department of Transportation equal to five percent of a $1 million Federal Aviation Administration grant for new lighting at the Brewster airport. The city is also obligated to match the state’s contribution with five percent from its own budget to complete the funding package.
The new upgrade will allow visitors and aircraft pilots to remotely activate lighting as needed for airport operations.
The FAA allots the city $150,000 every year for the airport,” said Public Works Director, Lee Webster.
The city has deferred using the annual allotment for the past three years to have a sufficient stockpile of funding to finance the new lighting system, but the monies must be used this year or the annual allotment will decrease.
The lighting installation is projected to begin somewhere around mid-summer and will allow pilots to remotely activate the runway lights as needed.
“Right now, they are on all night,” Webster said.
Weather delays have pushed back completion of repair work on Griggs, Hanson and Indian streets until the middle of June.
“I’m hearing now that it may be the week of June 19 or June 26,” Webster said of the chip seal work.
The state Transportation Improvement Board agreed to Webster’s request to add the city street work to a larger project underway on State Route 173 between Bridgeport and Triangle Exxon.
Council also renewed the Satellite Management Agreement to allow certification of the Group B water system at the airport. The state requires the maintenance measure performed by the Satellite Management Agency through the Department of Health.
