BREWSTER – Family Health Centers will observe National Health Center Week with a celebration honoring three local superheroes on Wednesday, August 22.
This year’s nominees for the Local Superhero recognition include Brewster Police Chief Nattalie Cariker, businesswoman, Brewster pool manager, and community volunteer Shan Miller, and Brewster Boys and Girls Club Director Brian Paine.
Among other community activities, Cariker brought National Night Out to Brewster for its second observance last Tuesday, Aug. 7.
Miller opened Sweet T’s Unique Gifts in 2012 and recently relocated the business at Brewster Drug and True Value. She also manages the Brewster pool.
Paine has been Director of the BBGC since it opened in March 2015.
The FHC celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Brewster Boys and Girls Club, 601 W. Cliff Avenue. The festivities will include kids’ games, prizes, arts and crafts, yoga and Zumba workouts, face-painting, mindfulness, snacks, food vendors and other activities. Fire trucks from Douglas Okanogan Fire District 15 will be on hand along with a special guest speaker.
FHC will also squeeze in free glucose and blood pressure tests, infectious diseases and prevention workshop, proper weight and body mass index (BMI) guidance, and other health enhancement activities.
FHC locations in the Quad City area include Brewster and Bridgeport. Other centers in Okanogan County are at Okanogan, Omak, Tonasket, Oroville, and Twisp.
National Health Center Week, August 12-18, has been celebrated for more than 30 years by the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) and last year more than 1,650 NCH Week events were reported. The states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana have all issued Health Week proclamations this year. Washington Governor Jay Inslee signed the Washington proclamation on June 1.
