PATEROS – A head-on collision between two trucks last Thursday, July 6, claimed the lives of both drivers and sent an injured passenger to three Rivers Hospital for treatment.

According to a Washington State Patrol report of the accident, Kenneth Fennix, 25, of Zillah, was driving a 2000 International straight truck northbound on State Route 153 between Pateros and Methow when he collided with a southbound 2009 Kenworth truck and trailer driven by 60-year-old Steve Osburn of Clarkston.

The collision occurred at milepost 8.86, the WSP report said, killing both drivers. A passenger in the Fennix vehicle, Richard Hayland, 34, of Yakima, sustained injuries in the crash and was transported to Three Rivers Hospital in Brewster for treatment.

The WSP report said the straight truck, driven by Fennix, veered across the centerline and into the path of Osburn’s vehicle, a dump truck with attached trailer. The straight truck came to rest in the middle of the roadway, blocking all lanes, while the dump truck and trailer came to rest along the roadway and still facing southbound.

Traffic was backed up in both directions as troopers investigated the cause of the accident and a tow vehicle from Randy’s Towing in Brewster worked to clear the roadway.

Both vehicles were totaled in the accident.

The extent of injuries and condition of Hayland were not known at the time of this writing.
