BREWSTER – The 13th annual Brewster Salmon Derby that was cancelled on the heels of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife chinook salmon season closure earlier in July, got a last-minute resurrection when a reevaluation of counts prompted WDFW to reopen the season effective August 1.

Derby organizers Randy Coles and Lori Kratzer scrambled to revive sponsors and get affairs in order in time for the 6 p.m. skippers meeting on Thursday evening, August 2. The Derby begins Friday morning, August 3, and ends Sunday, August. 5.

In addition to the prospect of landing that are expected to average around 15-20 pounds, entrants will compete for cash and prizes including the grand prize King of the Pool, $2,000 jackpot. The adult derby winner will pocket $1,500; $550 will go to the Youth winner between ages 9 and 14, and the 8 and under top prize is $100. The Kid’s Sockeye winner will get $250.

Cash prizes will also be awarded to the top 10 finishers in the Adult Division, the top 10 in the Youth Division, and the top five in the Child’s Division. Raffles and prizes will be part of the festivities all weekend.
