Senior Center selects BBQ raffle winner, plans giving tree

Posted

BREWSTER – The long-anticipated raffle drawing for the three-piece Weber barbecue set was finally held at the Brewster-Pateros-Bridgeport Senior Center on Halloween Day. The prize was donated to the Center earlier this year and the Center began selling raffle tickets hoping to reach a goal of $500 in sales. That goal was reached, the drawing was held, and the winner was Brewster college student Vanessa Terrones.
The Center’s Second Annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest drew more than a dozen entries. Winners were: Angelina Walker, first place, Paula Peckham, second, Pauline Glessner, third, and Lupe Angel, honorable mention.
The Halloween Chili Feed was well attended, the trick-or-treaters were well-mannered, and the costumes were great, Center President Kathy Lowry said.
“A lot of us seniors do not get trick-or-treaters at home and this was a great opportunity for us all to see the kids and hand out candy.”
“We are definitely doing a holiday giving tree this year, as well as a basket of food,” said Lowry. “The tree and basket of food will be given to a needy family who will be chosen at a later date.”
Lowry said the giving tree will feature the names of a family together with what each would like to receive from Santa this Christmas.
“Hopefully the seniors will be able to fulfill their wishes with a couple of gifts for each,” said Lowry. “Members of the community are asked to partake and come and pick a name or donate to the basket for some good food for a Christmas Dinner.”
The Center is gearing up for the election of new 2018 officers. The election will be held in December and new officers are wanted for each position.
Those interested can contact Lowry at 689-2815 or stop by the Center to be placed on the ballot and receive a copy of duties for each position.
“It is a great institution and filled with lots of great people,” Lowry said.
The next Play Day is on Friday, Nov. 17.
