Elinor Louise Hughes Hutchison Tryon

Posted

Elinor Louise Hughes was born in Harrison, Arkansas, on May 14, 1921, to Viola and Henry Elbert Hughes.  She passed away at home in Safford, Arizona, on June 14, 2017.

Elinor had one sister, Julia Morris; two step-sisters, Gertude Lankford Hutchison, and Margaret (Midge) Lankford Hughes Saucer; six brothers, Bert Hughes, Edward Hughes, Johnny Hughes, Harry Hughes, Cecil Lankford, and Hugh Lankford.  At the age of 8, her father was killed in a construction accident while working on the Osage Dam.  The family then moved to California, and homesteaded in the Newberry Springs area.  Her mother later remarried Jake Lankford.  All of her siblings proceeded her in death; with the exception of two sisters-in-law, Jean Lankford of Citrus Heights, California and Trudy Lankford of Whitehall, Montana.

In 1936, her family moved to Eugene, Oregon, where she met and married Douglas H. Hutchison in 1938, from Newberry Springs, California.  When Douglas and Elinor started their family, they had a rough start (their first born daughter, Viola was stillborn and their second born daughter Marie was premature; the doctors told them to take her home and love her as they did not expect her to live long).  Marie is now 77.  The family returned to Newberry Springs and had three more children, Douglas Howard, Jr., Georgia Lee, and Roy Richard, who was killed in a car accident in Mojave Valley, Arizona, in 1970.

Elinor retired from the Marine Corps Supply Center, in Barstow, California, in 1970.  She and Douglas spent their retirement years in the Brewster, Washington, before returning to the California desert.  They moved to Twentynine Palms, due to Douglas’ failing health.  Elinor was baptized on March 28, 1987, in Brewster, Washington.  Douglas passed away in 1991.  She was also proceeded in death by Marie’s husband K.C. Lewis, of Twentynine Palms, California and Georgia’s husband John Brown, of Barstow, California.

In 1992, she met and fell in love again with Eugene C. Tryon.  They were married on September 7, 1992, by their Seventh Day Adventist Minister and Best Friends, Henry and Freda Matteson of Twentynine Palms.  Elinor loved life.

She was the matriarch of our huge blended family.  Someone who truly believed in her religion, believed in family and friends.  She loved to go to church, travel, garden, fish/camp, play card games, crochet, knit, make arts and crafts, and teach at the Seventh Day Adventist School in Twentynine Palms.

She leaves behind her beloved husband, Eugene, of 25 years. Three children, Marie Louise Lewis, Twentynine Palms, California; Douglas Howard Hutchison, Jr., and wife Maryann, Tucson, Arizona; Georgia Lee Brown, Safford, Arizona, and daughter-in-law Candace Renno, Mojave Valley, Arizona.  She had 12 grandchildren, 36 great- grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.  All who admired the strong woman she was and loved her dearly.

Graveside Services will be held August 25, 2017, 10 am, at the Mt. View Memorial Park, in Barstow, California.
