YAKIMA – Just one win away from advancing to the state playoffs, the Brewster Bears varsity football team ended its post-season run with a 38-3 loss to Tri-Cities Prep last Friday, Nov. 3.
The Bears, among 16 teams competing in the Tri-District 5/6/7 loser-out competition, faced the District 6 leading Jaguars in a battle for eight state berths. Tonasket also lost at District while Manson and Lake Roosevelt advanced.
“Defensively we played very well for the most part but got gassed as the game went on,” said coach Jake Johanson.
Brewster’s only offensive score came on a 27-yard field goal by junior Michael Chacon with just one play remaining in the game.
“We started a lot of young guys as the season progressed which is a benefit for us looking ahead,” Johanson said.
The Bears will only lose seniors Caiden Riggan and Connor Wiggs to graduation next year.
“Caiden has been a part of this program since he was probably in third or fourth grade,” said Johanson. “He has been a constant on both offensive and defensive lines for the last four years.”
Since joining the program as a sophomore, Wiggs has been a versatile player also covered every position on offense and defense except for defensive line.
“He is the kind of guy who will do whatever you ask him to do with a smile on his face,” said the coach of Wiggs. “One of the tougher kids we have had at Brewster since I have been here.”
