SUMNER – The Brewster girls’ varsity soccer team recovered from a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime shootout loss to St. George’s on Friday, Nov. 17, to defeat Adna, 2-0, and win third place in the 2017 WIAA 2B State Soccer Championships, Saturday, Nov. 18.
The Lady Bears finished the season with a 20-1 win/loss record that included the Central Washington 2B League title and the Bi-District 5/6 trophy.
Brewster lost to St. George’s, a team the Lady Bears defeated in the regular season, the same way they beat Liberty Bell for the CW2B League championship, in a five-ball overtime shootout.
Against the Mountain Lions, Brewster connected on three of four kicks while Liberty Bell missed the mark on three of four to take the loss. Against the Dragons, Brewster came up one short, 5-4. The Lady Bears took a 1-0 lead into halftime only to have St. George’s tie the game mid-way through the second half. The teams remained locked through the overtime period leading to the shootout.
Brewster will lose seven players to graduation next year including CW2B Player of the Year, midfielder Marlisa Garcia. Other graduating seniors are midfielders Rosa Tinoco and Claire Burgett, forwards Yalina Vargas, Yvette Sanchez and Rosa Velasco and defender Naydelin Arevalo.
