Local wrestlers attend wrestling camp taught by Cameron Guerin

Posted

OKANOGAN – Opportunities to learn a sport at the feet of a master are few and far between, so when local wrestlers got the chance to listen and learn from the best high school girl wrestler in Washington State, scores jumped at the chance. Among them was perhaps the youngest of the group, six-year-old Louis Brotherton of Pateros who, though still in kindergarten, has already been wrestling for three years.
Brotherton showed up at Dawson Gym at Okanogan High School last Sunday, March 25, to participate in one of two sessions taught by Cameron Guerin, a Davis High School senior in Yakima. Guerin is a four-time state wrestling champion, four-time national champion and Pan American champion who has her eyes set on competing for a spot on the 2020 Olympic wrestling team.
Among her other achievements, Guerin is a two-time Cadet World Team member, 2016 Pan Am medalist and 2017 Junior World placer. Guerin set Washington State history last month when she recorded 126 straight wins on her way to her fourth state title and became the only girl to finish her high school career undefeated.
Guerin was in Okanogan to teach the one-day camp at the invitation of family friend and Okanogan varsity assistant wrestling coach, Lee Morrison.
Brotherton, who also competes in rodeo events, according to his grandmother, was in Dawson Gym the previous day competing in the Little Kids Wrestling Tournament. He returned Sunday to learn some new moves from one of the best. He was one among 36 youngsters who turned out for Guerin’s two-hour afternoon class.
Guerin’s next national competition is in May 11-13, at the Junior World Team qualifiers in Irving Texas. If she decides to try for the 2020 Olympic team Guerin said she may spend next year at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Where young Brotherton ends up with his wrestling career is up to him, but at least he can say that he started early by learning from the best.
