BRIDGEPORT – Fillies High School sophomore Joanna (Jo Jo) Prestegui was named a Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA)/Wendy’s State Athlete of the Week for the week of May 19-25 (Week 37) for her accomplishments at the recent State Track and Field Championships in Cheney.

Bridgeport Athletic Director Scott Darwood said Prestegui was selected for “helping to lead the Bridgeport High School girls’ varsity track and field team to the 2019 Girls Track and Field Para-Combined State Championship.”

Prestegui won first place in both the 100-meter run and javelin events and second in the discus and shot put in the Ambulatory Division of competition. Coupled with junior teammate Yareli Palacio’s eighth place finish in the shot put and javelin events the combo won the Para-Combined title.

A letter to Prestegui from the WIAA said: “Throughout the school year, the WIAA and Wendy's honor 12 student-athletes per week from around the state. This award is designed to honor Washington's best, and your performance certainly qualifies for the recognition. We know you spend a great deal of time and energy and that participation requires dedication and discipline. The WIAA and Wendy's salute your efforts.”

“Her teammates, coaches, school staff, student body and community couldn't be more proud of both Jo Jo and Yareli on their efforts and accomplishments,” said Darwood. “Both the state title and the WIAA/Wendy’s recognition are really quite the accomplishments!”
