State finalist Garcia leads Bears wrestlers into competition

Posted

BREWSTER – Senior Alex Garcia, whose fourth place in the heavyweight division at the Mat Classic XXIX WIAA State Wrestling Championships last February predicts an even better finish this season, leads the Brewster Bears varsity wrestling into competition this year.
Garcia, who won his division at the Omak Invite last Saturday, Dec. 2, is one of two state veterans returning from last season. The other is younger brother, Gabriel, whose first state appearance as a freshman is a fast start for the young grappler.
The remaining three veterans from last season are Micbael Vazquez, Eduardo Bohorquez, and Jose Villanueva.
Wrestlers and their competitive weight brackets include:
Alex Garcia, senior, 285 lbs.
Edwardo Bohorquez, sophomore, 220 lbs.
Jose Villanueva, junior, 182 lbs.
Gabe Garcia, sophomore, 170 lbs.
Michael Vazquez, junior, 160 lbs.
Justin Knowlton, junior, 138 lbs.
Kaitlin Garcia, eighth grade, 115 lbs.
Javier Rosario, junior, 106 lbs.
Eighth grader Kaitlin Garcia, the only girl on the team, is following in her brothers’ footsteps, and with a purpose. Young Garcia competed in four exhibition matches at the Omak Invite and defeated three of the four suffering her only loss to a senior.
Brewster was scheduled to compete at the Liberty Bell Mixer last Tuesday, Dec. 5, and will travel to the Okanogan Invite on Saturday, Dec. 9. The Bears’ only home tournament will be the Brewster Mixer on Jan. 4, 2018.
The Bears finished in 28th place as a team at state last season.
