Lady Bears corral 6-1 soccer victory over Bridgeport Fillies’

Posted

BRIDGEPORT – The first non-league meeting of the host Fillies’ varsity girls’ soccer team and the visiting Brewster Lady Bears was an even-up contest through the first 20 minutes of the first half of play.

The heavily sophomore Bridgeport team got a right-side kick past Brewster’s goalkeeper and team captain Mayra Garcia inside the first eight minutes of play to put the first score on the school’s new scoreboard.

The Lady Bears, coming off a season-opening non-league home loss to Omak on Sept. 7, did not take long to tie the game, 1-1, at the 23:30-minute mark in the first half.

Seven minutes later Brewster scored a second goal giving them a 2-1 advantage with 16:34 minutes until halftime.

The Fillies answered back less than two minutes later with a goal that came after Garcia fell on a scoring attempt but lost control of the ball. The referee ruled the ball already dead before Bridgeport capitalized on the opportunity to knock in what would have been the tying goal.

The Lady Bears scored again with under two minutes remaining on the clock to take a 3-1 halftime lead. The second half was all Brewster as the Lady Bears added three more goals to win, 6-1.

Brewster head coach Gabe Gonzales said his team of 15 players is short its normal complement of two dozen or so while Brewster took the field with 25.

The Fillies were scheduled to travel to Manson on Sept. 19. They will host Omak on Sept. 23, followed by Oroville on Sept. 26, and play at Pateros, Sept. 28.

The Lady Bears played at Chelan, Sept. 14 and ended in a tie game.  Bears play at Tonasket, Sept. 19, host Quincy on Sept, 21, and Pateros, Sept. 2, before going back on the road to Manson, Sept. 28.
