TACOMA -- Brewster High School junior and varsity wrestler, Alex Garcia, fought his way through four opponents to win fourth place in his 285-pound weight division at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Mat Classic XXIX State Wrestling Championships held last Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17-18 at the Tacoma Dome.

Garcia's win also helped the Bears' team place 28th among 43 teams at state.

Garcia got a first-round bye but ran into eventual state champion, Seth Bridge, a senior from North Beach in the second match. It took a while, but Bridge finally defeated Garcia by a fall in five minutes, 48 seconds in the third two-minute round to send Garcia into the consolation bracket.

Garcia defeated Tonasket's Ian Vanatta by a fall in 1:39 to keep his hopes alive for a medal. Garcia's next opponent, Marcello Lazaro of Illwaco, went down to a fall in 4:35 and moved Garcia into competition for third and fourth place against Tucker Guiles of Lind-Ritzville. Guiles took that match by a fall in 1:45 of the first round to leave Garcia in fourth place.

Freshman, Gabe Garcia, ran into a buzz saw in his first 160-pound match against Darrington junior, Gage Burtenshaw. The experienced Logger handed his younger rival a 15-0 defeat and advanced to win the first-place medal.

Garcia, dropped into the consolation bracket, lost his next match to Adna sophomore. Ashton Dowell by a fall in 2:56 and was eliminated from competition.
