Area athletes, teams nominees for NCW Sports Awards

Posted
Several area athletes and teams received recognition for their accomplishments by the NCW Sports Awards, the second-longest running scholarship program in the state of Washington.

Brewster's Timbo Taylor and Markie Miller both received nominations for individual honors, male athlete of the year and female athlete of the year respectively. Taylor served as Brewster's starting quarterback in football, a starting guard in basketball and the baseball team's ace pitcher. Brewster earned playoff spots in all three sports. Miller is an All-League outside hitter in volleyball. She also was the team's leading scorer in basketball this past season and the softball team's ace pitcher. Both the volleyball and softball team earned trips to the state tournament.

Brewster baseball head coach Todd Phillips also received an individual honor, a nomination for male coach of the year, after leading the Bears to a 23-2 overall record and a trip to the second round of the state playoffs.

Two local teams competed for the same award. The Pateros girls basketball team led by John Ellis and the Brewster softball team led by Rick Miller received nominations for female team of the year. The Nannies finished third place in the state in basketball. The Bears softball team finished the regular season as co-champions of the Central Washington B League with the Okanogan Bulldogs. The team won one game in the state tournament but were eliminated before the placement stage.

The awards occurred June 9 at Town Toyota Center in Wenatchee with an expected sold-out audience with nominees from around the region. Winners were not known at press time.
