Bearacudas edge Killer Whales for county championship

OMAK - For the first time in years, the 44-member Brewster Bearacudas swim team edged out the Methow Valley Killer Whales by a slim four-point margin to win the 2016 Okanogan County Summer Swim League (OCSSL) championship in a four-team competition at Omak, Saturday, July 30

"It was a very close meet all the way to the end," team volunteer Sheryl Bultman said.

With only a handful of points separating the leaders throughout the 90-plus heats there was nonstop noise and cheers for everyone.

"I believe we had the lead in the beginning of the meet then fell to second about half way through," Bultman said. "I am not sure how many times the lead changed teams but I am pretty sure we were behind until the final round of relays at the end of the meet."

Every swimmer who score a point was critical.

"It wasn't just our top swimmers that helped in this win," Bultman said. "All the swimmers that scored in places second through sixth place played a huge role in our team winning."

The scoring for places 1-6 for championships are as follows:

"It was a total team effort where every point mattered," coach Stella Preissler said. "It has been many, many years since we have won champs."

Bultman knows that the team hasn't won the championships for at least the past eight years.

"Brewster has not won the championships from the time my son and daughter joined the team 2008," Bultman said.

Next year the Bearacudas will have to defend their title.

"Summer swim season is done for this year," Preissler said. "It's going to be an adjustment to not see these swimmers after spending almost every day with them for the last 7-8 weeks."
