BREWSTER - If they win the state championship March 5, the Brewster Bears will have achieved two amazing feats in the same day.

Not only do they get a ring as the best boys' hoops team in 2B, but they will have made it through 365 days without losing a game.

The Bears last lost in the semifinals of state March 6, 2015, to Liberty, 55-52, according to cwbathletics.com. Yes, we know, they would still be a day shy, but this is a leap year. The 65th day of last year was March 6. The 65th day of this year is March 5.

Strange things happen at state tournament time, with its cavernous arenas and different sightlines. Three teams stand between Brewster and the state title.

The first one is St. George, The Dragons will have an edge at least in one aspect: The school is located 10 miles away from the arena. No hotel reservations or long trips.

St. George comes off a win against Mabton, 54-47 at regionals. , and they have a tough defender in Erik Farias, and a strong player in Collin Cremers, who had a double-double against the Vikings, with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Their record coming into the game against Brewster is 17-9.

We all know what the Bears bring to the table: stout defense, selfless scoring, and a multi-pronged attack that can give you fits even if you shut down one of the boys in red.

Just ask Adna, who managed to score the second-most points against Brewster all year --54-- and still lost by 26.

Four different players scored 10 or more. Timbo Taylor had 20, Chance Williams had 18, Josh Hammons had 13 and Joe Taylor (pictured) had 11. Moreover, Edgar Najera had eight, Cade Smith had six, and Isidro Najera had four.

So let the strange things happen at state time. The Bears, semifinalists a year ago, look poised to go much farther this year

To make the leap, so to speak.
