Apple Pie Jamboree meeting Jan. 30

The Apple Pie Jamboree committee will hold its first meeting of the new year Friday, Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. at the Pateros Public Library.

Committee members will discuss distribution of the money raised at the 2008 town celebration and will talk about some of the events for 2009. All interested Pateros residents are being invited.

Tickets on sale for snowmobile club fundraiser

Horse Crazy, the ridin', ropin', rockin' all-cowgirl trio from the Methow River Valley, will be the featured act at the annual fundraiser sponsored by the Tri-River Snowmobile Club Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Lake Pateros Grill and Sports Bar in Pateros.

The evening features a steak dinner, followed by Horse Crazy's performance. Tickets are on sale now, and advance purchase is requested due to limited seating. People who want to buy tickets can contact Kurt and Julie Hensley, 689-2843, or Rebecca Meadows, 923-2687.

Toddler exercise program at community center

Parents and their children two to five years of age are being invited to an exercise program for the little guys and the big guys at the Columbia Cove Community Center.

The "Toddler Exercise Program" uses tumbling, walking and jogging and exercise balls, among other things, to promote fitness in children and their parents. Classes are held Monday and Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., said community center director Eddie Allen.

The program requires membership to the community center, $14 for three months.

Hospital guild meeting moved

The Okanogan Douglas Hospital Guild has pushed back its monthly meeting one week; guild members will meet Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. in the hospital dining room. All interested persons, guild members or just interested in joining, are invited.

BRIDGEPORT

Chamber sponsors business crime prevention meeting

Business owners (and just plain residents) from throughout the Quad City area are being invited to a meeting to discuss the best ways to prevent crime Thursday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Bridgeport City Hall council chambers.

Dave Helvey, detective with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, will talk about ways business owners can protect themselves from crime, from fraud to forged checks to robbery. Helvey is a 20-year veteran of law enforcement and has worked for the sheriff's office since 1991.

Admission is free. Refreshments will follow.

Community Action Council to meet

The Okanogan Community Action Council will hold its monthly meeting Wednesday, Jan. 28, beginning at 5:25 p.m. at the council's office, 414 South 2nd Street in Okanogan.

All interested county residents are invited.

Change in hours at Okanogan Behavioral Health

Administrators at the Okanogan Behavioral Health office have announced a change in hours, effective Tuesday, Jan. 20, the agency will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. It will be closed on Friday.

Director Roger Bauer said the change was in response to anticipated budget cuts prompted by a shortfall in state revenues. Emergency services will still be available when necessary, Bauer said.

College financial aid workshop Sunday

High school seniors and others who plan to attend college in the 2009-10 college year, but who need a little help negotiating the byways of financial aid, can learn more about filling out federal financial aid applications during a workshop sponsored by Wenatchee Valley College this Sunday, Jan. 25 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the computer lab at Friendship Hall on campus.

The workshop will help students fill out the application forms for federal aid; college administrators, financial aid experts, high school staff and community volunteers will be around with tips and assistance. Assistance will be available in English and Spanish. Students should bring their financial information, including 2007 (or 2008, if they're done) tax returns, student aid ID numbers, Social Security number and other identification, records of untaxed income and other financial information. All the information will be kept confidential.

Admission is free. All prospective college applicants are invited.

'Spray Smart' workshops planned

The Okanogan County Coordinated Weed Management Area Board will sponsor a series of county wide workshops to help people set up their backpack weed sprayers. The "Spray Smart" classes will show people how to calibrate their sprayers to get the most weed control for their money and time. Advance registration is required because class dates and times will be scheduled based on the level of interest. Ecology subject of First Tuesday program

Maintenance of the environment and its effect on the rise and fall of societies will be the subject of the "First Tuesday" program Tuesday, Feb. 3 sponsored by the Methow Conservancy.

Dana Visalli, a naturalist and biologist, will talk about "Ecology and History: Why Societies Really Fail. The program will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Twisp River Pub; the pub opens at 6 p.m. for people who want to order off the bar menu.

Admission is free.

Solid waste council to meet

The Douglas County Solid Waste Advisory Board will hold its regular meeting Thursday, Feb 5 at 1 p.m. at the Douglas County Public Services Building, 140 19th Street NW in East Wenatchee.

Items on the agenda include discussion of the 2009 and 2008 budgets, programs and goals for 2009. All Douglas County residents are invited.
